I haven't updated in a while because...well, I don't really have much to show haha.
I was too busy with school and work so I'll post some of it.

This was my first (or second) assignment for both painting and watercolor class. For painting class, we did the typical grayscale swatches. The bar on the right is my first attempt, the left is a my second which came out much better. The one of the right was my watercolor assignment, which was to copy an old master's painting. I decided to do one of Bouguereau's piece (fuck I can never spell his name). Had a fun time doing that one.

This was just in-class painting session. The first week was drawing with burnt umber and then wiping the highlights, second was using a mix of burnt sienna, french ultramarine, and permalba white (I used titanium white) to create a limited but colored portrait. Then the following week we used Zorn palette which is the 4 colors Anders Zorn used (ivory black, white, cadmium red, and yellow ochre). A lot of what we do in this painting class is similar to what I've learned at the Art Students League but more basic and breaking down the steps. The top painting is painted with the Zorn palette, kind of wish I have another 10 min to work on it (at least paint over the brown under-painting seriously lol).

Okay now that I talked about school stuff, here's a downside of it.

I'll be quitting school.

(Actually, I'm taking a leave of absence for 2 yrs and then I'll do a voluntary withdrawal if it works out)

Yeah I know right. Well, it's not like a sudden thing or because I'm tired of it. It's true I don't have enough money for college, but I've been thinking about what's best for me this past 5 months and I've finally decided. We all think about what's best for ourselves and for me it came down to this. It was kind of accidental the way this happened because somehow recession hit very hard and banks stopped lending money. But I thought I can work and make up for the tuition myself if my parents can't. I don't part time, but I take freelance work which is a pretty good monthly pay. That's why I started my second year but it didn't go the way I thought it would. Balancing school and work was just too difficult. It gets tough when you only get to sleep every other day (sleep 3 times a week, 3-5hrs each) and stressing about getting good grades and good relationship with your client. There was a time when I thought pulling an all-nighter was so stressful back in high school. This is incomparable. Chest pain, vision blurring, seeing purple spots, sudden hives, and fingernails deforming... it gets really scary (especially the nail part. ew ). I asked myself if it's really worth it for the next 2 and a half more years for a single piece of paper that shows I graduated from college.

I feel that most people go to college to learn what a studio experience is and study art that's unavailable in high school education or to just build confidence. I feel that art college is redundant after going to ASL for almost 3-4 years during high school, and I do plan on returning once I take a leave - concentrate solely on what I want to do.

Well if I did have the money, I would've wait it out and graduate safely if I could. But given the choice right now, maybe it's a time to step up and make a difference. My parents knew this was coming and it didn't take much to convince them because I have a solid plan. Who knows if it'll work out or not, You'll see.

I won't be participating C80 in person, but I did work on several projects for this summer!

2nd Day - Nigrante will have a booth at ア-45b. Unfortunately they will not have a new CD but they will sell their past CDs - Scriptures, Elysha, and Lety at their booth! I drew for Elysha and Lety CDs. This time I drew a new promotional illust.

We have a booth under the circle name "KICHIGAIJIN" with the theme "肉(niku - meat)" hence the name Nikubon (meat book). I'm pretty much the odd one out but it's a book full of cute girls with some kind of meat theme. I drew two and the other one is book exclusive.

Another project I worked on was JAS-SKY-MOKKOR2 in which a group of writers and a group of illustrators team up to write a short novel with illusts. I worked with the writer _RYTR who is also the head of the project.

Something I drew in pixiv chat :D (it's still a beta and needs more work into it.) It's similar to a regular pchat but it's flash based and the tools are much similar to tegaki or some of the android/iphone art apps.

There has been a recent unfortunate disaster in Japan on March 11 along with countless aftershocks and following nuclear dangers. To show my concern and support to the country I was born in, I decided to open sketch commissions - 100% of all proceeds going to Japan as donation. A friend of mine offered to take my donation to her employer (who is able to match my donation and double the amount) to donate to Save the Children. Including my own donation, I made up to $500 - hence $1000 will go as donation. I'd like to thank all the people who offered their donation and also my friend and her employer for letting me do this. I pray for the best.

I drew this for a friend's birthday :D. It's his original character, Good Satsuma

It started when I was eating clementines, he asked what unshuu mikan was in english. I told him it's called satsuma and he decided to draw a character out of it lol (we were skyping during his ustream).

Another friend also drew his character! He mainly draws lineart so I decided to color it

I tried coloring it in a manga style, like how you would color it with a copic marker. Anyways, both are done with SAI. :D I had a fun time

Another one of my homework for painting class. I actually cropped 3/4 of the image because I didn't really like how it came out D:. After I scanned it, I found a lot of errors on the face as well so maybe when I get the time, I'll fix the whole drawing and upload the entire painting. I'm not very used to watercolor but it was fun to use them :D

Eyes

I have this huge fascination for eyes ever since I started drawing. As I improve my skills over the years, many parts of the drawing changes its form (anatomy, facial structure, the colors, etc.)... One of the hardest part for me to change were the eyes of my people. I always kept it very fantasy-esque and stayed away from both realism and over exaggerations. However, as everything else seems to become more accurate, or "realistic," I couldn't draw it the same way anymore. For example, the way I color the faces are much softer, more skin-like over the years... but the eyes were too strong for the rest of the features because it never changed. The eyes lost its original quality and I'm slowing developing a new way to adjust without losing the fantasy quality. From the bottom to top, it is from old to newer, respectively.

Mesh Exercise

I did this for Visual Computing class. I think it's my second time touching the gradient mesh tool on illustrator and there are a lot of mistakes in this. Since the lens area was done with CS5, it wasn't compatible with my CS that I had at home. So sadly the mesh disappeared when I finished it up D: . Finished it in 2 days.

My original character. I have a background story for her and somewhat of a plot idea. I want to make a small comic revolving around her but I don't have any confidence in story-telling. Don't really know what to name it either, but I did decide to make her name simply Rose. Well, maybe one day I'll do it.
